Today, Kevin Sabet, President of Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), and Patrick Kennedy, honorary board member, released this statement regarding President Obama's nomination of Michael P. Botticelli as Director of National Drug Control Policy:
"The nomination of Michael P. Botticelli as Director of National Drug Control Policy is historic. A proven leader in delivering evidence-based policies and programs, Mr. Botticelli is uniquely qualified for this position. As the architect of several successful strategies in the state of Massachusetts and as a tireless advocate for people in recovery, Michael will be the first ONDCP Director in recovery. He brings a keen understanding of local, Tribal, State, National issues, and we are confident that he will continue to advocate for evidence based policies based on public health and safety. We know that these are tough times for the Nation's substance abuse problems - given the recent rise in opiate and marijuana problems, but we know Michael will tackle these issues with the tireless energy and passion he has become known for."
